HACEP Kenya visited Muhuru Bay Sub-County Hospital to deliver test kits and train stakeholders
HACEP Kenya visited Muhuru Bay Sub-County Hospital to support local implementation of newborn SCD screening services. The team delivered test kits and coordinated a practical session with clinicians, laboratory personnel, and county stakeholders to strengthen screening readiness and continuity of care.
The training emphasized standard screening steps from sample collection through documentation and referral. Stakeholders reviewed how to ensure each screened newborn is linked to timely confirmatory testing and family-centered follow-up support.
"Strong facility teams and clear referral pathways help families receive the right care at the right time."
Participants also discussed ways to improve caregiver communication, including how to explain screening outcomes and available services in clear and culturally sensitive language. The session reinforced collaboration between facility teams and community health structures.
Key focus areas during the Muhuru Bay training
- Efficient use and accountability of SCD test kits
- Accurate screening records and routine reporting
- Referral completion for newborns requiring further testing
- Follow-up coordination with maternal and child health clinics
HACEP Kenya will continue technical mentorship with Muhuru Bay Sub-County Hospital to monitor uptake, track referrals, and support quality improvement as newborn screening services expand.
